About Us

My photo
Réans, Armagnac, 32 Gers, France
Our objective is to promote friendship between women of all nationalities living in Gascony, SW France, to share our interests and to offer help when needed. The Club started in 2008, with twenty English ladies living in Gascony, using a foreign language and experiencing a new life. Since then, several different groups have been added and our membership has grown into the hundreds, with new ladies moving to the area and ladies who have lived here a while, who have discovered us, who want to make new acquaintances and discover new areas of interest. Today we have eleven nationalities, and our speaking/working language is English. The GLC meets on the second Tuesday of each month, excluding July and August.Every member receives an email each month, giving the name of the restaurant, the chosen, menu and a booking form. In 2014, we became a non-profit making Association, known as Ladies Lunch Club de l’Armagnac and was re-named in 2019 to Gascogne Ladies Club. Our annual subscription fee of 10 € is payable in January each year. Each member of the Club may participate in some or all of our various groups

The June 2014 Ladies Luncheon will be held on

Tuesday 10th June at

at 12.30 for 1.00 pm

To conclude the first half of the year, before our summer break, we have arranged our June lunch at
Le Café Zik on the edge of the beautiful lake in Marciac.

Many of you will remember it from our past two Christmas lunches, but we thought it would be nice to try it in the summer, to give everyone the chance to spend some time, either walking around the lake, or partaking of one of the activities on the water!
Or indeed visiting the town.

We are very pleased to announce that our new (Member)Name Badges are ready, and will be handed out at the lunch. We hope you will like this new, simple European design.

We look forward to welcoming you at Café Zik, but should you be unable to attend, please remember there will be no lunch in July and August.
We therefore wish you an enjoyable summer wherever you will be, and hope you will find the list of activities (issued separately)useful.

LLC Bookclub May 2014

LLC Bookclub - What's next?

For May 15th, 2014 we have chosen a book by an English author who is living near Auch in the Gers.
Venue as usual.

Her name is Amanda Hodgkinson and she will come and meet us to talk about her novel and her writing etc. Amanda writes in La Depeche every Sunday; short, sometimes amusing observations of life of an expat in France.
It will be interesting to talk with her about her 1st book is 22 Britannia Road.

In her powerful debut, Hodgkinson takes on the tale of a family desperately trying to put itself back together after WWII. Silvana and Janusz have only been married a few months when the war forces them apart. Silvana and their infant son, Aurek, leave Poland and disappear into the forests of Eastern Europe, where they bear witness to German atrocities. Meanwhile Janusz, the sole survivor of his slaughtered military unit, flees to France. There, he takes up with a local girl and, though he loves her, awaits the war's end so that he can go in search of his wife and son. He eventually finds them in a refugee camp and they travel to England together, where they attempt to put the past behind them. But the secrets they carry pull at the threads of their fragile peace. Hodgkinson alternates viewpoints to relay the story of three desperate characters, skillfully toggling between the war and its aftermath with wonderfully descriptive prose that pulls the reader into a sweeping tale of survival and redemption.

Amanda Hodgkinson has just released Spilt Milk

Spilt Milk

1913. Unmarried sisters Nellie and Vivian Marsh live an impoverished existence in a tiny cottage on the banks of the Little River in Suffolk. Their life is quiet and predictable, until a sudden flood throws up a strange fish on their doorstep and a travelling man who will change them forever.
1939. Eighteen year old Birdie Farr is working as a barmaid in the family pub in London. When she realises she is pregnant she turns to her mother Nellie, who asks her sister to arrange an adoption for Birdie's new born daughter.
But as the years pass Birdie discovers she cannot escape the Marsh sisters' shadowy past - and her own troubling obsession with finding her lost daughter will have deep consequences for all of them...
A nice addition to our monthly book ? If you have the time. We are very much looking forward to have this meeting with the author herself.

Book choice April 2014

The book for April is on Thursday 17th April 2014, 2.30 at the usual venue reading

If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things by Jon MacGregor.

If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable things - book cover

Erica Wagner in The Times, was the first published review:

“McGregor takes his time. This novel owes as much to poetry as it does to prose. Its opening, an invocation of the life of the city, is strongly reminiscent of Auden’s Night Mail in its hypnotic portrait of industrialised society: here are ‘Sung sirens, sliding through the streets, streaking blue light from distress to distress, the slow wail weaving urgency through the darkest of the dark hours..’ The writing in the rest of the novel moves from moment to moment in a way that recalls To The Lighthouse or Mrs Dalloway: it charts with confidence and subtlety the slight shifts of emotion that can change relationships with seismic force…
If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things is a dream of a novel. It has the slow-motion hyperclarity of the images that fill our heads in sleep; its liquid prose is precise enough to draw time nearly to a stop, to stretch out moments and describe the spaces between them. It is a novel that is “about” hardly anything at all, and in this very modesty its ambition is revealed.”

We had a very pleasant book club meeting on March 20th, 2014 sitting out in the warm sunshine discussing
The 100 year old man by Jonas Jonasson

Everyone enjoyed this book for its amusing, sometimes incredible tales and life experiences of Alan, the 100 yr old man.   A couple of people, who weren’t so enamoured with it at first, persevered and ended up enjoying the book.
It was clever how one meeting seemed to lead on to yet another incredible meeting often giving a good insight into some of the leaders of the 20th century.
And it had a happy ending which seems hard to find nowadays!

The book for May 2014 is on Thursday 15th May, same time and place:
22 Britannia Road by Amanda Hodgkinson
when she will be joining us!

The June 2014 book was chosen from Viv’s selection of Dutch authors:
It’s The Angel Maker by Stefan Brijs and the meeting is on Thursday June 19th

 The Angel Maker

The village of Wolfheim is a quiet little place until the geneticist Dr. Victor Hoppe returns after an absence of nearly twenty years. The doctor brings with him his infant children-three identical boys all sharing a disturbing disfigurement. He keeps them hidden away until Charlotte, the woman who is hired to care for them, begins to suspect that the triplets-and the good doctor- aren't quite what they seem. As the villagers become increasingly suspicious, the story of Dr. Hoppe's past begins to unfold, and the shocking secrets that he has been keeping are revealed. A chilling story that explores the ethical limits of science and religion,
The Angel Maker is a haunting tale in the tradition of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Frankenstein. Brought to life by internationally bestselling author Stefan Brijs, this eerie tale promises to get under readers' skin.
