About Us

My photo
Réans, Armagnac, 32 Gers, France
Our objective is to promote friendship between women of all nationalities living in Gascony, SW France, to share our interests and to offer help when needed. The Club started in 2008, with twenty English ladies living in Gascony, using a foreign language and experiencing a new life. Since then, several different groups have been added and our membership has grown into the hundreds, with new ladies moving to the area and ladies who have lived here a while, who have discovered us, who want to make new acquaintances and discover new areas of interest. Today we have eleven nationalities, and our speaking/working language is English. The GLC meets on the second Tuesday of each month, excluding July and August.Every member receives an email each month, giving the name of the restaurant, the chosen, menu and a booking form. In 2014, we became a non-profit making Association, known as Ladies Lunch Club de l’Armagnac and was re-named in 2019 to Gascogne Ladies Club. Our annual subscription fee of 10 € is payable in January each year. Each member of the Club may participate in some or all of our various groups

LLC Garden group meeting February 2016

Dear Gardeners
The first garden group outing of 2016 will take place on:

Thursday 4th February 2016 at 1.30 pm

Image result for insects

Jane Cooper has kindly offered to host this event at her
house: address can be requested from Caroline

We will be following on from our December meeting when we learned about bug hotels
and we will be assembling our own together in Jane’s barn/gîte - although there is heating it might be a good idea to dress warmly.

You will need to bring
a box or container (an old wine crate would be ideal)
and some materiel to fill it with to attract a variety of insect life -
bamboo sticks, straw, twigs, pine cones, dry leaves, pieces of bark…

I have attached links to two useful websites to give you some inspiration.

As always, there will be tea and cake !

Hilary Nightingale will be bringing a trap for asian hornets that she has made to show us.

We look forward to seeing you all on the 4th,
Pat & Caroline

If on a Winter’s Night, a Traveller by Italo Calvino  (Ann C)

 See original image

'Surprise is part of the pleasure of this book, and I won't tell the story of its several failing and successful quests. Let me just say that Ludmilla and the Reader, stranded by the publishers of Calvino and Bazakbal, run across eight more novels of different origins - Japan, Latin America, Belgium, Ireland and three imaginary countries -and that all of these novels are interrupted for one reason or another: a further error of binding, suicide of the author, theft of the book, a sudden arrest.'

Thursday March 17th  2.30 pm :
Theme of the month –
Literature on Plants & Gardens
(your choice of any book relating to plants & gardens).
The Water Smart garden at the Denver Botanic Gardens

Thursday April 21st 2.30 pm :
Housekeeping by Marilyn Robinson  (Ginster)

See original image

Housekeeping is the story of Ruth and her younger sister, Lucille, who grow up haphazardly, first under the care of their competent grandmother, then of two comically bumbling great-aunts, and finally of Sylvie, the eccentric and remote sister of their dead mother. The family house is in the small town of Fingerbone on a glacial lake in the Far West, the same lake where their grandfather died in a spectacular train wreck and their mother drove off a cliff to her death. It is a town "chastened by an outsized landscape and extravagant weather, and chastened again by an awareness that the whole of human history had occurred elsewhere." Ruth and Lucille's struggle toward adulthood beautifully illuminates the price of loss and survival, and the dangerous and deep undertow of transience.

All meetings, unless notified, are at Pam’s at 2.30.

What a good post Christmas celebration we had last on 7th January 2016 and many thanks to Wendy for supplying the lovely bubbles and to others for their nibbles.
'The Postmistress' overall was enjoyed by all but had a few mixed reviews.
We also welcomed Nellie to our book club.

Happy New Year!
Jackie
